"You said in your interview that you were in a deep despair and that you thought you would need to overcome it to awaken, but it was seen right at the heart of the despair" (p. 34). I paused to see if he would confirm or correct. Instead, he stared at me, mouth partly opened, and did what I could think of as gawk. So I went on: "It makes me curious because there was an entire workshop in Berkeley on the use of spirituality to address emotional problems or psychological issues that are unresolved. I was wondering if you can explain that?" He said interrupted by saying thank you. I did make effort to be humble; I knew it would put him on the spot, but I had to know the answer. He himself claimed he had asked every possible question in his seeking.
The answer came in jerky statements that went on for 10 minutes, barely if at all addressing my question. The teaching (I won't call it satsang) was filled with banal and meandering statements that repeatedly went back to what I call "wave theory," using the ocean as a metaphor for unity and separation. Buddha's teachings used this metaphor, but used it more precisely and in a context of greater wisdom (easily verified). Akemi felt the teaching response to all 5 questioners was unclear and that he wasn't a good speaker. Someone else I know agreed. I was surprised that 100 people showed and astounded by Jonathan Gustin's assertion that Jeff is number 51 of the 100 most spiritually influential people in the world." This experience brought me to further delve into the literature on spiritual bypassing. I have to conclude that there are many people trying to use the spiritual path to relieve themselves of psychological issues, and that a teacher who is doing the same would resonate with them. Perhaps this is why someone like Jeff can publish four books and have international popularity before age 30.
1 satsang with dialog, interview in "Convers's on Non-Duality."
Wisdom: 2 (weak metaphors, unclear answers); Heart: 1 (out-of-place bursts of laughter, no sign of empathy or compassion).
Notes about spiritual bypassing from my post in Inquiries About Awakening:
- John Welwood introduced the term "spiritual bypassing," calling it "premature transcendence."
- In the Bay Area Dorothy Hunt and John Prendergast have done work in this area.
- I have witnessed dozens of cases of people using satsangs to inquire about problems that are psychological and emotional in nature. Dying pets, relational conflicts, depression, etc.
- The problem of spiritual teachers themselves 2awakening in the middle of emotional problems Foster and continuing to teach with unresolved conflicts.
